Welcome Message

FOAM 2019

The year 2019 is a significant one for the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

It marks the 10th year since we began with our pioneer batch of medical students who are now in their 5th year of their careers in various hospitals in Malaysia.

We are proud of this milestone and it is perhaps serendipitous and befitting that we are organizing the inaugural FUTURE OF AESTHETICS IN MALAYSIA CONFERENCE (FOAM) 2019 in collaboration with the Cosmetic Institute Of Australia.

I say serendipitous because it is a pleasant coincidence and befitting because it marks our first foray into an area of postgraduate clinical medicine that is growing incrementally in Malaysia and all over the world.

The theme for the conference this year is STARTING RIGHT AND MAKING IT BIG IN AESTHETIC MEDICINE. The starting right portion of the theme is an indication of our determination to ensure that the practice this discipline is well grounded in the basic sciences, clinical competence and professionalism.

I would like to thank the organizing committee for their hard work in putting together this programme.

My sincere gratitude to the speakers who have made themselves available to share their experiences and thoughts on this subject.

I wish the conference all success and to you the participants, SELAMAT DATANG ke MAHSA and an enjoyable conference.

PROF. DATO' DR RAVINDRAN JEGASOTHY
DEAN
FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
MAHSA UNIVERSITY

Opening Address

Prof. Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Hj. Mohamed Haniffa bin Hj. Abdullah

Founded in 2005, MAHSA University was the brainchild of the illustrious Professor Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Hj. Mohamed Haniffa bin Hj. Abdullah, who is also MAHSA's Pro-Chancellor and Executive Chairman, Board of Directors, MAHSA Sdn. Bhd. Tan Sri is a medical practitioner whose vision involved creating a centre of excellence for education in this region of Malaysia. His vision was to produce qualified and compassionate professionals to serve the needs of our beloved nation through the inception of MAHSA, which began first as 'MAHSA College' 15 years ago. Over the years, MAHSA was upgraded to a university college and in 2013, to university status, which was achieved in an impressive duration of time. The institution and its graduates are testimony to the achievements of MAHSA and its recognition as a centre of excellence for medical and health sciences education.

Prof. Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr. Hj. Mohd Ismail Merican

Mohd Ismail Merican was the Director-General of Health, Malaysia and President of the Malaysian Medical Council from 2005 to 2011. He is currently Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Governors of MAHSA University and Senior Consultant Hepatologist and Internal Medicine Specialist at Prince Court Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur. Dr. Haji Mohd Ismail Merican was the personal physician to the King in 1982, Sultan of Selangor in 1984, 1990 and 1994 and to the Governor of Penang from 1989 until 2002. He has been conferred many academic, civil and honorary awards, including the distinguished award of Tan Sri and was bestowed the ‘Most Outstanding Fellow of the Year’ by the Japanese Council for Medical Training in 1987. He is still deeply committed to undertaking research work on his area of interest, liver disease. He has, to date, numerous publications in local, regional and international peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Haji Mohd Ismail Merican is an honorary clinical consultant with the Medical Faculties of University Putra Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and others.

Dr Benjamin Chan, M.B.B.S

Dr Benjamin Chan is originally from Ipoh, Malaysia. His parents wanted him and his siblings to gain world-class education and so worked hard to send them to Australia to pursue their individual passions. Dr Chan knew he always wanted to be a doctor and so, pursued his medical degree in Melbourne’s most prestigious university. Upon completion of his degree and working in the local Melbourne hospital, at a young age, he took a keen interest in aesthetic medicine. He started training professionally in this field and even travelled to countries like Korea and USA to be trained by the best aesthetic physicians and brought these skills back to Australia. Over the years, through his experience, he has become one of the top leading aesthetic physicians in Australia and now he is devoting most of his time to training the next generation of aesthetic physicians. He realised his passion to teach when automatically he was approached by more and more doctors to be their mentor due to his reputation and felt satisfaction in sharing his skills with his colleagues. At present, he owns and successfully runs multiple aesthetic clinics in different states of Australia. In 2015, he set about to start Cosmetic Institute of Australia with a team of aesthetic professionals to formalise aesthetic training and create the new standards in aesthetic medicine.

After offering in-house training for various manufacturers and distributing companies for years, Trudy opened her own school in Melbourne. Here she consolidated all her years of acquired knowledge and clinical practice. Now, as Fleming Laser, she is busy running Laser Safety courses which are the basis for the follow up of clinical hands-on classes in hair removal, pigment removal, vascular treatment, tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation in its many forms.
